The US soldier has been flown to Kuwait, he is accused of killing 16 civilians in Afghanistan, the unnamed staff sergeant faces legal proceedings which will be conducted in another country and the move coincides with the visit from Leon Panetta, US Defence Secretary.
An incident involving a vehicle marred his arrival, a stolen pick-up truck was driven at high speed onto the runway near Mr Panetta's plane at British base in Helmand province, Camp Bastion. He has since left the province for the capital, Kabul.
The unnamed staff sergeant left his base before dawn on Sunday and the Afghan parliament have demanded he put on trial in their country.
If found guilty, he could face the death penalty, Mr Panetta has said and The Taliban have promised revenge attacks.
